Jogen Chowdhury
'Those Unknown Faces' | Print on paper | 21" x 31"
Signed | Limited edition of 25
Jogen Chowdhury is one of India's most distinctive figurative artists, a master of line whose work has always held the human body and everything it carries at its centre. Trained in Kolkata and Paris, he developed a style entirely his own: dense cross-hatching, sinuous unbroken curves, figures that are simultaneously sculptural and psychological. His paintings and works on paper are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Glenbarra Museum, Japan.
Three women, three dispositions, three kinds of solitude occupying the same frame. Chowdhury draws no conclusion between them. The sinuous line moves across their drapery and skin with equal attention, treating vanity and withdrawal and declaration as equally worthy of the same patient gaze. These faces are not portraits, they carry no names, no histories, no fixed identities. This print on canvas faithfully captures the intricate density of Chowdhury's line. A work of quiet complexity, to be lived with and returned to.
