Manu Parekh
'Holy Water At Banaras' | Print on canvas | 15" x 72"
Signed | Limited edition of 45
Manu Parekh is one of India's most distinctive modernists, known for his expressive brushwork, intuitive colour, and a decades-long engagement with the city of Varanasi. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and has held a practice spanning painting, theatre, and craft over six decades.
Banaras became the subject Manu Parekh has returned to most consistently across his career. In "Holy Water at Banaras", the composition unfolds with figures at the water's edge, temple structures emerging from a dense ground of teal and black, lights punctuating the darkness. The palette is nocturnal and layered, the brushwork gestural. Parekh does not document the city so much as register its atmosphere. This print on canvas captures the expressive intensity of Parekh's painted surface, making this iconic imagery a work to be lived with every day.
