Manu Parekh is one of India's most distinctive modernists, known for his expressive brushwork, intuitive colour, and a decades-long engagement with the city of Varanasi. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and has held a practice spanning painting, theatre, and craft over six decades.

Parekh has spent a lifetime trying to find the painting equal to Banaras — and in this diptych, he comes as close as paint will allow. The canvas overwhelms before it explains.
