Jogen Chowdhury is one of India's most distinctive figurative artists, a master of line whose work has always held the human body and everything it carries at its centre. Trained in Kolkata and Paris, he developed a style entirely his own: dense cross-hatching, sinuous unbroken curves, figures that are simultaneously sculptural and psychological. His paintings and works on paper are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Glenbarra Museum, Japan.

Three figures, a black ground, and the dense, unbroken line that is Chowdhury's signature. There is no hierarchy here, no clear emotional transaction. What the line does here is everything. It moves across skin and cloth without distinction, treating the body as surface and the surface as feeling.
