Manu Parekh is one of India's most distinctive modernists, known for his expressive brushwork, intuitive colour, and a decades-long engagement with the city of Varanasi. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and has held a practice spanning painting, theatre, and craft over six decades.
"Banaras in Black and White" represents a deliberate departure from the vivid palette Parekh is best known for. Rendered in dark tones across a wide horizontal format, the composition moves through temple domes, tangled trees, and fragmented architectural. The gestural line work carries the same intensity as his painted works; the absence of colour only concentrates it. This print on canvas captures the expressive intensity of Parekh's painted, making this iconic imagery a work to be lived with every day.
