Manu Parekh is one of India's most distinctive modernists, known for his expressive brushwork, intuitive colour, and a decades-long engagement with the city of Varanasi. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and has held a practice spanning painting, theatre, and craft over six decades.

"The Blue Surge of Banaras" is among Parekh's most immersive treatments of the city — the Ganga rendered as a dominant, surging field of blue that pushes through and past the ghats, the temples, the figures at the water's edge. Parekh worked the Banaras series across decades precisely because the city resisted resolution — always changing light, and always changing water.
