Manu Parekh is one of India's most distinctive modernists, known for his expressive brushwork, intuitive colour, and a decades-long engagement with the city of Varanasi. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and has held a practice spanning painting, theatre, and craft over six decades.

In "Moonlight Banaras" Parekh stretches Banaras across a long horizontal plane temples rising in silhouette against a sky that glows with the pale, blue-tinted quality of moonlight alone. The light here is not daylight's certainty.
