'Untitled' | Print on paper | 9" x 11"

Signed | Limited edition of 25

Ram Kumar is one of India's most deeply contemplative modernists, a painter whose work moved from the human figure to the landscape without ever losing its essential subject and what it does to the people and places it inhabits. Trained in Paris under Fernand Léger, he returned to India and found in Varanasi not a sacred city but an existential one. A member of the Progressive Artists' Group, his canvases and works on paper carry the weight of a practice built over seven decades.

Ram Kumar places the structures at the horizon, rendered in spare, precise line against a sky that presses down with the full weight of dark ink. Ram Kumar came to the cityscape after Varanasi changed him, after he understood that a city could be painted not as a place people lived but as a condition people endured. Here that understanding is distilled to its essentials: ink, paper, a skyline, and the silence that surrounds it on all sides. This limited edition print on canvas faithfully captures the quiet drama of Ram Kumar's ink work — the stark contrast of a darkened sky against spare architectural line, the vast emptiness that is never quite empty.
